The police have made major breakthrough on the killing of a police officer

The Police Special Task Team investigating these incidents, have made a major breakthrough yesterday by arresting a 32-year-old man and recovered one firearm.

The suspect who is positively linked to the murder of a Lieutenant Colonel, attempted murder of the POP Constable and four armed robberies at the four clinics in the Waterval area, will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court tomorrow, 12 October 2017.

The deceased in this matter was identified as Lieutenant Colonel Phineas Marubibi Mamatsiari (55) from Dzwerani Village who was attached to the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Thohoyandou and the Constable (32) is still recuperating in hospital.

The hijacked Police car and a firearm were recovered by the Investigation Team on Monday, 9 October 2017, in the bushes along the Thohoyandoy and Phundamaria road.

The Police manhunt for the second suspect and the tracing of the robbed firearms is still unfolding and anyone who can assist with information about the remaining suspect, may contact Captain Wilson Mashamaite at 0716759928, the nearest Police Station, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the Crime Line sms 32211.

This breakthrough emanates from incidents of murder, attempted murder, armed robberies and carjacking which occurred from the 2017-10-08 at about 20:45 until the following morning of the 2017-10-09 at Vuwani and Waterval Policing areas outside Thohoyandou.

During this incidents, the deceased who was attached to the Thohoyandou Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit was shot and killed and a Constable attached to the Thohoyandou Public Order Police was shot and injured.

It is alleged that the deceased arrived at his home from work when he was attacked, shot and killed by unknown two suspects and the state vehicle which he was travelling with, was hijacked.

The Police were summoned, mobilised other Stations and the Public Order Police and reacted swiftly to this incident by following the suspects.

While the manhunt was unfolding, reports were received that the same suspects have attacked the security guards from Mpheni clinic, Watervaal clinic, Mbhokota clinic and Bungeni health centre where four (4) firearms were robbed from each security guard. They were immediately pursued and a motor vehicle chase ensued. During that process, there was cross fire between the Police and the suspects where one Constable attached to the Public Order Police was shot and seriously injured.
