DURBAN – Operations to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province led to the recovery of 150 firearms last month. A number of operations are being conducted to remove illegal firearms which contribute to serious and violent crimes.
Most of the firearms were recovered within the EThekwini, UMgungundlovu and Uthukela district policing areas. Police recovered 143 pistols, four shotguns, three rifles and 1004 various rounds of ammunition with 172 arrests effected. These operations are continuing to limit unnecessary deaths of innocent people and robbery incidents especially in businesses.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula urged the community members to ensure that they handover illegal firearms and licensed firearms belonging to their deceased family members to the police. “Those that have illegal firearms in their possession must make use of the Firearm Amnesty to hand in these instruments of death,” he added.
