EASTERN CAPE – The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has welcomed the sentencing and conviction of Silungile Mabengu (27) and Nkosivumile Bhekisifo (33) on two counts of robbery by the Bizana Regional court on Friday.
In May 2016 four males entered a Jet Store in Bizana pretending to be customers.
A few minutes later, they accosted the store Manager and other staff members with firearms and demanded the safe keys and got away with R20 000 and cell phones.
Before disappearing, they forcefully dismantled the CCTV machine and locked everyone in the cash office.
No injuries were reported during the time of the offence.
An intensive search by the Serious Organised Investigation team and local police ensued which lead to the arrest of Mabengu in October and later in December, Bhekisifo was also nabbed.
Both convicts were released on R2000 bail each whilst case was transferred to Bizana Regional court for trial.
Mabengu and Bhekisifo were finally convicted and were found guilty on two counts of robbery.
Mabengu was sentenced to 15 years direct imprisonment on each count, which will run concurrently as he was a fist offender.
Bhekisifo was sentenced to 18 years direct imprisonment which will also run concurrently as he was having previous convictions. They were also both declared unfit to possess firearms.
