Pretoria: The police in Brits have finally brought to book one of the wanted suspects believed to be behind a spate of carjackings allegedly committed in Brits, Mooinooi, Bethanie, and surrounding areas. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to tackle vehicle theft in the region.
According to South African Police Service, the police received information on Thursday morning, 02 October 2025, about the suspect’s whereabouts. A team comprising Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 Detectives, an Intervention Team, the Brits Crime Combatting Unit (CCU), the Trio Task Team, and the Rustenburg Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) was formed. The team ultimately apprehended the suspect while he was driving a hijacked Volkswagen Polo in Brits. During the subsequent interview, the suspect led the team to Soshanguve, where his accomplice was spotted driving a reportedly hijacked blue Ford Ranger vehicle. The police engaged in a pursuit after the suspect allegedly opened fire on them when they attempted to stop him. The chase concluded when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, vanishing into the night. The vehicle was later confirmed to have been hijacked at Mooinooi in May 2025.
The 34-year-old suspect now faces multiple charges, including five counts of carjacking, three of kidnapping, one of murder, and one of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges. The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 October 2025.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, stated that the arrest is a testament to the relentless pursuit of the law and justice, emphasizing that the arrest signifies the beginning of the end for the suspect’s criminal network. The police are actively pursuing other members of the carjacking syndicate.
