Pietermaritzburg: The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Dr. Namane Dickson Masemola, will lead a ministerial support and oversight visit to the Msunduzi Local Municipality in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday. This visit is a part of CoGTA’s efforts to address governance challenges, enhance service delivery, and reinforce the capacity of local municipalities.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Deputy Minister’s visit is a sustained initiative aimed at improving municipal governance and functionality across South Africa. Under the theme ‘Every Municipality Must Work,’ the department emphasizes its commitment to ensuring municipalities operate efficiently and in alignment with residents’ needs.
The oversight visits are integrated into the District Development Model (DDM) engagements with key municipalities. These visits are in accordance with Section 154 of the South African Constitution, which mandates national and provincial governments
to provide legislative and other necessary support to municipalities. This support is intended to help municipalities manage their affairs and fulfill their developmental responsibilities effectively.
Since last year, Deputy Minister Masemola has been actively engaging with municipalities nationwide, offering hands-on support and oversight to tackle key challenges. The visit to the Msunduzi Local Municipality follows an intervention in the Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo, continuing this strategic oversight initiative.
