Health CS James Macharia in South Africa for HIV, malaria forum (Daily Nation (Kenya))

Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia led a delegation of East African officials to two forums in South Africa on HIV/AIDS and malaria.

The two forums are UNAIDS Eastern and southern Africa Regional multi-stakeholder consultations and Roll Back Malaria partnership meeting.

The UNAIDS meeting discussed the organisations 2016-2021 strategy that aims at addressing treatment targets and reduction of the number of new HIV infections annually by 2020.

HIV prevalence in the country is at 5.6 per cent while the number of annual HIV infections has dropped by 40 per cent in the last past few years.

During this forum, UNAIDS promised that they ensure that advocacy and communication is strengthened towards HIV and AIDS.

Roll back Malaria Partnership is convened among other things to deliver on the new Global Malaria Action Plan aimed at elimination of the disease and to stay on course with the post 2015 development goals.

Malaria remains a major health concern with nearly 28 million Kenyans living in malaria-risk areas and the disease contributing up to 19 per cent of all hospital admissions each year.
