DURBAN – On 11 July 2020 at 18:30, a 26-year-old Mthobisi Dlamini and his cousin Sthembiso Dlamini (35), were at Simplace Informal Settlement in Effingham when an a argument ensued with the accused Given Mkhize (32).

Mkhize allowed the anger to get the best of him, went home for a knife, came back and fatally stabbed the cousins on the upper bodies. Mkhize left the area and went into hiding. Charges of murder were opened at Greenwood Park SAPS for investigation.

An extensive search for the accused led the detectives to Bulwer area on 14 July 2020, where he was hiding at a relative’s home. Mkhize was arrested and detained at Greenwood Park police station. A watertight docket was presented at court for successful prosecution.

On 12 May 2021, Durban Regional Court found the accused guilty of two counts of murder and sentenced him to 30 years imprisonment for both counts. He was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for each count of murder. Dedication and commitment from Greenwood Park detectives is applauded. We hope this sentence will bring closure to the family who lost their loved ones.
