News: The National Commissioner applauds the swift arrest of armed robbers in the Western Cape

PRETORIA – The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole has commended police officers for their swift response to an armed robbery which resulted in the arrest of two alleged robbers yesterday in Parow, Cape Town.

Security personnel had collected money from a retail store at the Parow shopping centre and while returning to the security vehicle, a group of at least four armed men attacked the guards. A shootout ensued leaving one guard wounded and the suspects made off with a cash box containing an undisclosed of money.

SAPS members from the Western Cape Flying Squad responded to the robbery. They spotted the getaway vehicle, a white VW polo in the Nyanga area. A shootout and a high-speed chase ensued between the robbers and the police officers. Two suspects, 32 and 38 years of age were wounded and subsequently arrested. They are currently under police guard in hospital.

Police seized the suspects’ vehicle and a money box presumed to be the one robbed in Parow. Two other suspects fled the scene and the police are following possible leads to trace an arrest them.

General Sitole has wished the wounded security guard, who is in a stable condition, a speedy recovery.

The alertness and swift response by the police to ensure that the suspects were caught within minutes of committing the robbery is highly commendable”, said General Sitole.

“The speedy response by our police officers is indicative of the effectiveness of our Safer Festive Season Interventions”, added General Sitole
