Paulpietersburg rapist sentenced to 15 years imprisonment

Yesterday, 27 October 2016, Siphimpilo Mbatha (24) was convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Vryheid Regional Court. He was convicted after the court heard how he raped a 71-year-old victim at Bilanyoni area, Paulpietersburg. On 12 September 2014 at about 17:00, the victim was at her homestead when she was grabbed by the accused. She was raped and the accused claimed that the victim was his girlfriend. A case of rape was opened at Paulpietersburg police station and Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation. Through hard work by the members, the accused was arrested and charged with rape.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended the Vryheid Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for their excellent work that led to the conviction of the accused. I further thanked all those witnesses who gave evidence against the accused. he said.
