South Africa detected 1 366 new COVID-19 cases, representing an 8.1% positivity rate, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Monday.

Gauteng remains the worst-hit province after 563 people tested positive, followed by 189 in the Western Cape, 175 in KwaZulu-Natal, 132 in Mpumalanga, while the rest of the provinces recorded less than 100 infections.

This means there are now 3 605 222 confirmed infections since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health said 71 people lost their lives to the virus, of which 14 succumbed to the respiratory disease in the past 24 to 48 hours. This brings the death toll to 95 093 to date.

In addition, the number of hospital admissions has increased by 63 to 5 355 in the past 24 hours, while the active cases stand at 53 668.

Meanwhile, according to the latest vaccine statistics, government has administered 67 917 doses since the last reporting cycle.

This brings the total to 29 884 699 shots since the start of the rollout programme, while the country is now home to 16 477 074 or 41.40% fully jabbed adults.

In addition, there are now 1 232 552 vaccine doses that have been distributed to children aged between 12 and 17.

According to the data, the country has given 594 479 booster shots.

Of the 4 958 people over the age of 12 in hospital, 3 577 are unvaccinated, 191 are partially vaccinated and 1 190 are fully jabbed.

Globally, as of 31 January 2022, there have been 373 229 380 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 5 658 702 deaths, reported to the World Health Organisation.

In addition, 9 901 135 033 vaccine doses have been administered since yesterday.
