SA-Swiss Relations Strengthen Through Historic State Visit

Bern: President Cyril Ramaphosa has marked his State Visit to Switzerland as a milestone in the longstanding relationship between the two nations, being the first official visit by a South African Head of State since the dawn of democracy.

According to South African Government News Agency, during a press conference in Bern, President Ramaphosa expressed his honor in attending the two-day State Visit at the invitation of Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. The discussions centered on international issues and bilateral relations, with a focus on cooperation in trade, investment, science, and higher education.

Switzerland remains a key economic partner for South Africa, with strong links in investment and research. President Ramaphosa noted the shared vision of inclusive growth and sustainable development and emphasized the visit’s potential to boost political and economic ties between the two countries.

The President welcomed Switzerland’s new Africa Strategy for 2025-2028, which commits to supporting democratic governance and development across Africa. He also commended Switzerland’s global role in promoting peace and mediation, particularly in conflict resolution efforts in various African regions.

Acknowledging Switzerland’s support for South Africa’s economic transformation, President Ramaphosa highlighted Swiss-led initiatives promoting growth and inclusivity. A central focus of the visit was developing a youth cooperation framework to enhance training and skills development for young people.

South Africa also expressed gratitude for Switzerland’s support of its G20 Presidency, particularly on themes such as inclusive growth and global financial reforms. Additionally, President Ramaphosa appreciated Switzerland’s partnership in repatriating cultural artefacts belonging to the Nkuna Royal Family.

Reflecting on the visit’s spirit, President Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the future of SA-Swiss relations, aiming for greater benefits for both nations’ people. The press conference concluded a day of official talks and a welcome ceremony at Federal Square in Bern, where President Ramaphosa was received with full military honors.
