Pretoria: South Africa will shutter its embassy in Bulgaria, yet remain committed to maintaining robust relations with the Balkan state.
According to South African Government News Agency, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) announced the decision to close the South African Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria, effective 30 June 2025.
DIRCO stated that the closure is driven by fiscal prudence and the necessity to prioritize national resource allocation. This move is part of a broader strategy to realign South Africa’s diplomatic missions worldwide. Since 2021, South Africa has been adjusting its international presence to ensure financial sustainability while upholding its commitment to diplomatic engagement and bilateral partnerships.
The department emphasized that this decision does not diminish the value South Africa places on its longstanding relationship with Bulgaria. Instead, it is a step necessitated by responsible fiscal management. DIRCO Minister Ronald Lamola expressed optimism that the embassy closure is temporary. He conveyed the government’s intention to reestablish a dedicated diplomatic presence in Sofia once fiscal conditions improve, demonstrating a shared commitment to enhancing the partnership.
Before reaching this decision, comprehensive consultations were conducted between the Governments of South Africa and Bulgaria. Minister Lamola personally engaged with his Bulgarian counterpart, Ivan Kondov, to reaffirm South Africa’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. To maintain collaboration, South Africa will continue diplomatic and consular relations with Bulgaria through its mission in Athens, Greece, which will now handle bilateral engagements.
