Suspects to appear in court on unlicensed firearm related charges

CAPE TOWN – On Saturday evening, 25 June 2022, at about 19:10 members of Operation Restore were busy with stop and search operations in Japhta K Masemola Street, Khayelitsha, when they were stopped by a member of the public who informed them that he was pointed with a firearm by an unknown man sitting in a white VW Polo. The members followed up the information and found the vehicle with the male inside. The vehicle and the suspect were searched and a 9mm pistol with ammunition was confiscated. The 26-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect is due to make his court appearance in on Monday, 27 June 2022.

In an unrelated matter, members of Operation Restore were deployed in the Delft area to curb ongoing shooting and gang violence in the area. The members received information from Crime Intelligence of possible illicit activities at a premises in Matroosberg Cresent in Belhar. The information was operationalized and the premises was searched. The members found a stun grenade, ammunition, 136 units crystal meth, five gram crystal meth, 33 mandrax tablets, 19 units cocaine, 13 units heroin, police name badges and rank insignia. An adult male was arrested and detained on charges of possession of an explosive device, possession of drugs, and possession of presumed stolen property.

Once charged the suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.
