Two SAPS members under investigation after a weekend shooting

BUTTERWORTH – The shooting incident which occurred over the weekend near Yako squatter camp on Sunday 22 January 2023 in Butterworth, has immediately been referred by SAPS management to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for investigation.

This follows after information was received by the police about two (2) suspects believed to be police officials who were allegedly following information after their cell phones were robbed last week. The suspects both aged (28) allegedly confronted four men who were walking together, and fired shots which led to the group running to different directions. The two male suspects allegedly proceeded to a local tavern and further to another house where they confronted the owner, asking for their suspects whilst firing shots in the air and damaging property inside the rooms.

On Sunday the 23rd January 2023, one of the four men who escaped from the shooting was found lying dead in the morning in the vicinity. On investigation the police found that he had a bullet wound in the upper body and was certified dead by the paramedics. Cases of Murder, Malicious Injury to Property and Attempted murder have been registered. No arrest made at this stage.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed shock at the incident and said the law must take its course. General Mene further encouraged the police to cooperate with the ongoing investigations.
