Well Wishes for Police Officers Running the Comrades

Pietermaritzburg: The National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has expressed his full confidence and unwavering support to the 437 police officers who will participate in the 98th edition of the Comrades Marathon.

According to South African Government News Agency, the 437 South African Police Service (SAPS) members, including 66 females and 371 males from all nine provinces, will be among the over 22,000 runners participating in the legendary ‘Ultimate Human Race’ on Sunday in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

The participation of police officers in the marathon reaffirms SAPS’ commitment to health and wellness, as the paramount pillars of building a progressive organisation through productive and effective human capital investment.

“The increasing number of police runners in the Comrades Marathon year by year is a clear indication of the deep entrenchment of the culture of fitness and wellness within our ranks. Last year, 356 police officers participated in the Comrades Marathon, while in 2025 the number increased to 437, with an additional 81 police officers taking part in the race,” said the SAPS in a statement ahead of the race.

The police stated that the participation of officers in the race is a sign of determination. “[The] Comrades Marathon is more than a test of physical endurance; it is a celebration of unity, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit. The participation of police officers in the enduring 89-kilometre run signifies the magnitude of resilience, discipline, and unwavering determination.”

The Management of SAPS and all its members wish SAPS Comrades Marathon runners a successful and inspiring ‘Down Run’ from Pietermaritzburg to Durban as they continue to elevate and fly the SAPS flag to promote health and wellness, and moreover, to solicit community support in the fight against crime,” the SAPS stated.

The Commissioner is expected to address the parade of all the participating police officers in Durban on Saturday morning.
